Traders Count Losses As NPA , Taskforce Team Dislodge Makeshifts, Shanties At KLT
Management of the Nigerian Ports Authority NPA taskforce team has commenced theย clean-up exercise at Kirikiri Lighter Terminal KLT and its environs of Apapa Oshodi expressway inward Tin Can Island Port Lagos.
The exercise which started on Monday , saw the destruction of makeshift and shanties along the corridor, by officials of the NPA.
Similarly, a large number of the taskforce team were seen with machetes and some other equipment used to dislodge the traders in a bid to destroy the illegal structures along the roads.
A cross section of traders who spoke with our correspondent on Tuesday, lamented that they were taken unaware , while properties worth millions destroyed.
According to them, the sudden destruction of shops and kiosks would lead to unemployment in the informal sector because of the poor communication network to the occupants along the corridors by NPA.
A trader simply identified as Ruth lamented ” I was scared when the come at us in the tens and we started running.
“They were with cutlasses, some with hammers and things like that but we thank God because we still have life and life must go on.
Ruth who trade on cooked food maintained that the approach by NPA was wrong , calling on the government to provide another environment for the trade to start their business.
However, Latifah Isiaka bemoaned the poor communication network from the NPA noting thatย some of her items were stolen in the process of vandalisation of shops.
Recall that officials of the NPA had issued a 72hrs eviction notice to the occupants of the facilities.
