Stevedoring Firm Advocates Deployment Of Sniffer Dogs For Cargo Examination

Managing Director, Micura Services Limited, Chief Michael Ubogu has called on relevant government agencies to deploy more sniffer dogs to effectively aid cargo examination at the nation’s seaports  in curbing illicit drug importation to the country.

 

The frontline stevedoring contractor in Nigeria port operations, also advocated for more sensitisation of port workers and usage of technology in tackling the menacing development  of drug trafficking and abuse.

 

Detection dogs or sniffer dogs are  trained to use its senses to detect substances such as explosives, illegal drugs, wildlife scat, currency, blood, and contraband electronics such as illicit mobile phones.

 

Speaking over the weekend, against the backdrop of the recent seizures recorded by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the ports, Ubogu reiterated that with the dogs deployment to the various examination bays at the port terminals, there will be less work to be carried out by personnel.

 

He noted that the dogs alongside the Non Intrusive Inspection equipment (scanners) when operational will further expedite cargo examination  with less human interface adding that 100% cargo clearance can be reduced with the animal contribution.

 

According to him, a sniffer dog can examine a containerised cargo within minutes unlike what the scanner or 100% physical examination can do in a longer period.

 

He stressed that:”For me, I think the best way out of the fight against illicit drug importation and reduction is to deploy technology and the use of sniffer dogs where the need arises.

 

“Most of the containers don’t really need to be opened for examination because from the outside the dogs can detect if any illicit items are inside the containers and that will hasten the process of examination at the terminals,”the Micura boss explained.

 

He further called on the government agencies at the seaports to replicate what is obtainable at the airports noting that with the animals on ground for inspection and examination, it will save time , energy and resources .

 

On the Lekki Port commencement, he noted that talks are ongoing with management of the deep seaport adding that his firm will be interested to contribute its quota for effective service delivery for maritime business growth.

 

He further expressed optimism that the maritime sector has the  potentials to provide millons of jobs for Nigerians if well harnessed, pointing out as a hub in the sub saharan region, government should encourage its growth.
