SSASCFA Celebrates Victory In IMO Category C Seat Election , Says Minister Deserves Commendation

(SSASCFA) has announced that the major victory in securing the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Category C seat, by Nigeria a success that underscores the organization’s growing influence on the global maritime stage.

The Trade Union Congress TUC affiliate group stated that the election win was largely credited to the active and instrumental role played by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, whose strategic leadership and diplomatic efforts were pivotal in clinching the seat.

SSASCFA noted that this achievement highlights the commitment of Nigeria and the wider region to advancing maritime interests internationally, saying that the Minister deserves national honours for the victory.

According to SSASCFA President General Comrade Harrison Ugochukwu Asonye, in a congratulatory message on Saturday, the victory opens significant opportunities for enhancing maritime policy influence and partnership.

Asonye affirmed that “This historic milestone reflects our resilience and unity, allowing us to contribute meaningfully to maritime governance and sustainable development.

”The IMO Category C seat positions SSASCFA and other trade unions in the country to champion better coordination in maritime safety, environmental protection, and sustainable marine resource management.

SSASCFA President General further emphasized that this achievement showcases the strength of collective effort among maritime stakeholders and the government, projecting a unified commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities within the sector.

The union also reaffirmed its readiness to work alongside international partners to promote maritime trade and innovative practices pointing out that sustaining this momentum will be key to improving the welfare of maritime workers and boosting the socio-economic development tied to the blue economy.

Asonye expressed gratitude to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy for his role in the victory and urged continued collaboration to maximize the benefits of this newly won position.
