Shippers’ Council Pushes Dialogue Over Protests Amid Freight Forwarders’ MSC Blockade
The Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr. Akutah Pius, MON, has called on freight forwarders to opt for dialogue instead of disruptive protests that could harm Nigeria’s economy.
His appeal came in response to freight forwarders picketing Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) offices over a recent tariff hike.
The protesters rejected the Council’s mediation efforts, insisting no dialogue was warranted, and pledged to continue actions on Monday until the charges are reversed.

Dr. Akutah emphasized dialogue as the superior, faster, and more humane dispute resolution method compared to “bottled anger.” He cautioned that extended maritime disputes risk disrupting port operations and trade.
While recognizing stakeholders’ rights to voice concerns, the Council criticized some forwarders’ unprofessional behavior, including blocking regulators from entering MSC premises.Dr.
Akutah noted a prior intervention where the Council forced MSC to pause disputed charges for two days during talks.
He reaffirmed the Council’s role in mediating for fair practices and industry stability.
