SERAP Wants FG To Release Journalist “Chido Onumah ” Immediately

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Sunday, called for “the immediate and unconditional release of Chido Onumah, journalist and human rights defender.”

 

 

Nigeria’s State Security Service, SSS, reportedly arrested Mr Onumah at the Abuja airport on Sunday evening.

 

The journalist returned to Nigeria from Spain where he recently bagged a doctorate in communication studies.

According to @SERAPNigeria the SSS has yet to give any reason for Mr Onumah’s arrest but this may not be unconnected with his journalistic and anti-corruption work.

 

“Onumah’s arrest sends a chilling message to all journalists and activists in Nigeria that they cannot operate freely.

” We urge the Nigerian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all other journalists and activists currently in detention for their legitimate exercise of the right to freedom of expression.

 

“Nigerian authorities should stop harassing and intimidating journalists, human rights defenders and anti corruption activists.
