SENSITIZATION: NIWA Takes Safety Campaign To Ondo, Akwa Ibom

 

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) through its Eket Area Office haa sensitized boat operators and water users along Uttaewa loading point/waterfront in Ikot Abasi LGA of Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking on behalf of the Authority, the Area Manager of NIWA’s Calabar Area office Surv. Abubakar Wathanafa encouraged all the water users to adhere strictly to the Inland Waterways Transportation Regulations as well as other cardinal guidelines covering Inland waterways navigation in order to ensure safety on our waterways.

The campaign themed “SAFETY FIRST” had in attendance security agencies, members of the Nigerian Red Cross, Association of Boat Operators and Boat owners, Community leaders and all relevant stakeholders.

In a similar development, NIWA engaged water users on safety, emergency preparedness and response in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

Addressing stakeholders at the NIWA Jetty, the Area Manager, Mr. Balogun Thomas encouraged all water users to make sure they use live jackets when boarding.

He also pointed how human activities such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the waterways can lead to flooding and urged the people to desist from such so as to ensure safety.

The sensitization enlightenment campaign was attended by Security Agencies, community leaders, Maritime associations, youths and all relevant stakeholders.
