The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service on Monday ,has placed Bar Beach waters under surveillance following the recent seizure of smuggled frozen poultry products in the country fr the Victoria Island axis.
This followed the destruction a total of 3,201 cartons of frozen poultry products with Duty Paid Value of N 32,000,000.00.
Recalled that the beachcombers arm of customs had destroyed 120 cartons of contrabands through Badagry waters last Friday, even as it assured that smugglers have no where to hide courtesy the newly commissioned ships
However, officers and men of the command intercepted poultry products at the Bar Beach axis in Victoria Island at about 3pm local time.
Addressing journalists at the dump site ,Controller of the command,Comptroller ,B.N Binga said that no suspect was arrested in connection with the seized items but affirmed that with the newly commissioned vessels, officers and men would be able to arrest smugglers at sea.
According to him, the contrabands were intercepted based on intelligence gathering by officers and men of the command.
Binga reiterated that “We have commissioned our vessels and we are ready for any form of smuggling at any given time at sea ; therefore the smugglers should take note’.
He further appealed to smugglers to source for other means of livelihood , adding that with the Rolls Royce propelled built ships, mobility of the officers would be effective and efficient.
Comptroller Binga noted that aside the two ships to curb smuggling activities ,the service has put in place measures to fix some of the abandoned patrol boats and other apparatus to complement the seagoing vessels.
He added that the value the recent seizure was estimated at about N32.400,000 with value of N24,000,000.00.
