Oyo Govt Approves N9.3b For 106 Mass Transit Buses, As UI Workers Protest Alleged Imposition Of VC Aspirant

The Oyo state government has approved the procurement of one hundred and six mass transit buses to enhance intra city mobility and complement its fleet of buses from the pacesetter transport service with an estimated cost of 9.3 billion naira.

The approval was made by the President of the State executive council, Governor Seyi Makinde.

The commissioner for youth and sports, Seun Fakorede who disclosed this during a press briefing, explained that the rapid transit system would be involved in interstate services.

He hinted further that the transit buses would assist in transporting agricultural produces, which in turn will have positive impact on the state’s economy.

Also, the commissioner for budget and economic planning, Barrister Niyi Farinto hinted that executive council had granted approval for the rehabilitation and construction of two link roads around Akobo, with one beside NNPC mega station and the other at general gas, to relief traffic tension in the axis.

He added that the project would be executed through direct labour by the Oyo state road maintenance agency (OYSROMA) with an estimated cost of 64 million naira, and would be completed in two months.

Meanwhile, the gates of the University of Ibadan have been locked by staff of the institution, who are currently protesting against the alleged imposition of the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Kayode Adebowale as the next Vice-Chancellor.

Multiple individuals and unions of the varsity have alleged that the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka is doing everything to ensure the emergence of his anointed candidate, Adebowale.’

It was learnt that the protest by the workers was brought about by the release of the name of the six candidates shortlisted for the position out of those jostling for the seat. Adebowale is one of those shortlisted.

The workers blocked all entry and exit points into the institution, chanting various aluta songs such as “we no go gree oo, we no go gree, Imposition we no go gree.”

They also held placards with various inscriptions like: “Impose Adebowale and shut down UI for six years, ” “we shall never work with Alatise again among others.”
