Nted Cautions MWUN Executives Over Forthcoming Elections, Seeks Proactive Measures To Curb Ports Unrest

Immediate past President General, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Tony Nted Emmanuel has advised  the current leadership of the union led by Comrade Adewale Adeyanju to take proactive steps in tackling unforeseen circumstances that might arise ahead of the forthcoming elections of the union.

The union’s election is expected to hold in March 2021.

The incumbent President General ,Comrade Adewale Adeyanju tenure comes to end in February 2021 .

Speaking at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Lagos on Friday, Nted advised the union’s executives to ensure that industrial peace and tranquility reigns in the maritime industry noting that electioneering process attract some pockets of disruption from enemies of the union,which in turn may affect port operations.

Nted also assured the executives that he would also support the union to ensure that the forthcoming elections would be free and fair thus devoid of violence.

 

He reiterated that the union’s elections have potential disturbance and disaffections by some groups, urging the executives to manage such occurrence if arises ahead of time.

According to him, peace and togetherness should be the focal point of the current administration, in ensuring a successful election scheduled for March 2021.

Nted, a former Vice President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) advised that “This Exco must manage the situation very well so that the elections are not hijacked then become a hotbed of problem that can disrupt the entire industry and economy.

Advising the executive further, he maintained that “You must watch out for those signs of trouble and nip them in the bud earlier by ensuring that you put the right mechanism in place to guarantee a peaceful election processes.

“Please Mr. President be careful and manage the situation and you know from experience each time we have an election we get to see pocket of troubles here and there. If you are proactive then we can guarantee a peaceful election processes.

“As PG emeritus you know I will always be here to give that fatherly support, moral support, advisory support in terms of counsel, in terms of advise, wisdom, direction and necessary good will and network so that you can continue to do well and succeed.

“You can count on me to be there for you and all our comrades for the betterment of the entire industry”,he advised.

Speaking further,he noted that:”The struggle for maritime workers is the struggle of my life and for someone to put in 35 years in service is not a joke.

” I want to commend my successor Comrade Adewale Adeyanju for his tireless efforts in sustaining the gains made over the years in leadership. I commend you for the efforts and initiatives to ensure that the workers are protected adequately .

“I want to urge you to do more and encourage you to expand the scope of your various plans to enhance the fortunes of our comrades in the struggle.”

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of an award to Comrade Nted by the Publishers of Shipping World Magazine , Mr. Asu Beks as the most industrial peace ambassador of the maritime industry.
