NNS QUORRA Launches Maiden STCW Training For Seafarers’

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) QUORRA has officially began its inaugural Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) training programme for seafarers’

This milestone follows the ship’s accreditation as a certified Maritime Training Institute in October 2024.

This development marks a significant step forward in the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to enhance maritime safety standards and professional training for seafarers.

According to a statement from the official Meta page on the Nigerian Navy on Monday, 7 July 2025 , the maiden training session includes 12 participants and will run for two weeks.

It features comprehensive professional instruction in critical maritime safety and operational skills, including Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Fighting and Prevention, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.

Additional modules cover Security Awareness for all Seafarers and the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).

In his opening remarks, Commodore Benjamin Onalo, Commandant of NNS QUORRA, expressed gratitude to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, for his steadfast dedication to the welfare of naval personnel.

Commodore Onalo highlighted that this commitment was instrumental in securing the accreditation that enabled the commencement of the STCW training.

He also acknowledged the support and guidance of Rear Admiral Robert Obeya, Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command, which helped bring the program to fruition.

Commodore Onalo urged the participants to fully engage with the training, emphasizing that the certificates awarded upon completion are internationally recognized and will enhance their professional maritime credentials.
