NNPP Explains Cancellation Of Planned Protest Against INEC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has cancelled its planned protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prevent it from being hijacked by hoodlums and political rivals, which could instigate disorder.

The party had announced on January 10 that it would hold a peaceful protest in Abuja on Tuesday, January 20, to demand that INEC upload the authentic party executives led by Dr. Agbo Major.

In a statement signed by its Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, the NNPP affirmed its resolve to secure INEC’s compliance with court orders on the party’s true leadership without compromising Nigeria’s peace.

“We are law-abiding citizens, and our pursuit of justice will always prioritize the peace and unity of Nigeria,” the statement read.

“We are pained by INEC’s refusal to do what is right, but we remain committed to the proper path.

“As law-abiding Nigerians, we have no choice but to suspend the protest for the sake of our country’s peace.

“The party called on members to stay calm, promising a swift resolution to their grievances. It criticized INEC for repeatedly ignoring court directives to recognize the Major-led leadership.Public records show that the Abia High Court and the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja have ordered INEC to cease dealings with the Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso-led group pending an ongoing judicial review.

“This is not merely a leadership crisis but the termination of the Memorandum of Understanding between NNPP and the Kwankwasiya Movement led by Kwankwaso,” the statement clarified.

“We sought review in the FCT High Court because INEC was unduly delaying updates to its records in line with court judgments. We trust these matters will be resolved soon, and justice will prevail.”
