NIWA Signs MOU With Obat Oil To Establish Fuel Dump Stations Along Lagos Waterways

Apparently determine to cushion the effect of operators, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) on Tuesday said it has signed a Memoradum of Understanding (MOU) with Obat Oil for the establishment of fuel dump stations across the waterfronts of Lagos state.

The Lagos Area Manager, Engr. Sarat Braimah in a chat with our correspondent disclosed that the contract had been signed even before the Lagos State Waterway Authority (LASWA) launched it own recently.

Braimah identified the locations of fuel stations to include Marina, Mile 2, Badagry and Ikorodu.

According to her, the move is to cushion the effect of operators who are in need of fuel along the waterways corridor.

“We have signed contracts with Obat Oil and we want to have in four locations; Marina,Mile 2, Badagry and Ikorodu.

“We have already signed the contract before the launching by LASWA.”

Speaking further, she said that the agency would deploy water harvesters on the waters in Lagos from November that will clear all the marine litters within Lagos axis.

“From next month, you will see water harvester all over from Ikoyi, Victoria Island and other places clearing marine litters

The Area Manager noted that NIWA has embarked on sensitisation programme of stakeholders to understand the importance of safety adding that statistics has shown that the number of passengers have increased tremendously in the last one year.

She added that training of captains and crew would commence in November as part of efforts to engage the operators in the sub sector with relevant safety and navigation skills.

Braimah also lauded efforts put in place by the Managing Director of NIWA ,Dr. George Moghalu for the ongoing innovations and support towards ensuring a sustainable safe inland waterways.
