NIWA Leads Flood Awareness Campaign For High-Risk Areas In Imo State

Sequel to the predictions by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) which stated that 27 states including the FCT are at risk of experiencing flood, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) through its Owerri Area office carried out a sensitization campaign at the Oguta Pavilion in Oguta Local Government, Imo state.

Speaking at the event, the Area Manager of NIWA’s Owerri Area office Mr. Vincent Odia said “The essence of this engagement is to bring disaster awareness to residents of high-risk areas, where floods usually strike first”.

He encouraged the people to imbibe cultures that will help them in mitigating the impact of flood on the event of its occurrence.

He also urged them to abide by the safety protocols on the waterways among other measures.

Also speaking at the event, Gov. Hope Uzodimma represented by the state Commissioner of Special Duties, Mr. Nelson Abazu, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to mitigating the effects of the impending flood disaster, and also urged residents of flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds.

He assured them that the state government had concluded necessary logistics to relocate and safeguard the lives and property of residents.

Others in attendance were
officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency, some security agents and other relevant stakeholders.
