NIWA Boss Champions Nigeria’s Bid For IMO Category C Seat At Singapore Global Symposium

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji has represented Nigeria at a prestigious Global Symposium held in Singapore, alongside key stakeholders from the aviation and maritime sectors.

The event was graced by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Barrister Festus Keyamo, who was among the distinguished dignitaries in attendance.

Nigeria’s active participation in this Global Symposium carries significant implications for both the aviation and maritime industries.

Oyebamiji emphasized Nigeria’s ambition to secure a Category “C” seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, a move that will empower the country to influence global maritime standards and policies.

He also revealed that the Federal Government is in the process of developing a comprehensive national policy focused on the marine and blue economy.adding that this policy aims to leverage Nigeria’s extensive coastline to attract investment and stimulate economic growth.

The NIWA Managing Director further noted that Nigeria’s engagement in regional shipping agreements and initiatives strengthens its status as a vital maritime gateway for trade between Africa and the rest of the world, thereby fostering economic development.

Highlighting the transport sector’s contribution to job creation, Oyebamiji pointed out that millions of jobs have already been generated. He expressed optimism that the expanding aviation and maritime sectors will continue to create employment opportunities, boosting Nigeria’s overall economic progress.

He affirmed that the sectors are critical drivers of economic growth, revenue generation, and enhanced global competitiveness for Nigeria.

The NIWA Boss further added that””Additionally, improved aviation and maritime infrastructure will bolster the country’s broader infrastructure landscape, supporting sustainable economic development.”

On the topic of foreign direct investment (FDI), Oyebamiji stressed that upgraded port infrastructure and operational capacity are attracting international shipping companies, thereby increasing FDI inflows.

On his part, Keyamo echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the upcoming Nigeria International Air Show is poised to establish Nigeria as a regional hub for aviation and aerospace activities in Africa. This event is expected to attract investment and promote indigenous technological innovations.

Regarding airspace modernization, the Minister noted that the Federal Government is engaging with international airline operators through interactive sessions aimed at upgrading Nigeria’s airspace infrastructure to support sustainable sector growth.

Keyamo underscored the importance of partnerships, mentioning that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is actively collaborating with airport concessionaires to enhance service delivery, operational efficiency, and passenger experience.
