NIWA Advocates Improved Security On Delta Inland Waterways

The General Manager (Ports Services) of the National Inland Waterways Authority, (NIWA), Engineer Tammy Fiberesima has urged the federal government to improve on security presence to avert boat mishap and ship wrecks in order to make the Inland Waterways safe in Warri, Delta State viable .

 

Engineer Fiberesima, also stressed the need for businessmen operating along the waterways to be patronized.

 

Engr. Fiberesima who is newly promoted from Area Manager to GM level, spoke with newsmen at a sentforth held in his honour in Warri.

While noting that the businessmen are building blocks, Fiberesima said,”We need to open the space and improve the channels.”

He stressed that the systems facilities are a major problem,pointing out that since his appointment as “General Manager(Ports Services) he has been in consultation with the people including the businessmen to chat roadmap that will navigate the waterways.

According to him. “The facilities have failed. Funding is an issue. We need the right tool, hardware, software, knowledge and attitude to change things here.

 

” We have to make safety security. Infrastructure, if we try to fix it, it will give us 65% of the infrastructure we need.

“This dockyard can build boats. There’s no need for you to take our vessels to Cameroon.

 

“Even the divers in Warri are more better than the divers in Germany because in overseas, when the wave is so much, when the storm is so high, you can’t dive.

 

“But, take Warri person to that side, even in that period, he will dive. So,we have the guts. We have the talents. It is for us to bring it together.”
