Nigerian Navy To Upgrade Tongeji Island Outpost In Ogun State To FOB

The Nigerian Navy NN has disclosed plans to upgrade the Tongeji island outpost in Ogun State to Forward Operating Base (FOB) .

Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command on Thursday, 22 January 2026, , made this known when he paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, Executive Governor of Ogun State, at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The visit aimed to deepen NN-Ogun State partnership, with the Command reaffirming its commitment to protecting maritime and land borders against criminal threats from Benin.

Rear Admiral Mustapha emphasized Ogun State’s strategic importance to national security, announcing that the existing Naval Outpost at Tongeji Island will be upgraded to a Forward Operating Base (FOB) due to the island’s oil potential and border proximity.

He explained that the visit was to further strengthen the partnership between the Nigerian Navy and the Ogun State Government, adding that the Command remains committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime and land borders with the Republic of Benin and preventing criminal elements from gaining a foothold in the state.

Responding, Governor Abiodun commended the Nigerian Navy (NN) for bolstering security in the state, preventing infiltration from the Republic of Benin and safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

He highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island and the Olokola Deep Seaport Project in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, crediting NN’s role in the state’s peace through inter-agency collaboration.
