Nigeria Merchant Navy Union Calls For Action On Seafarers’ Welfare, Lauds NIMASA DG,

The Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association NMNOWTSSA has commended Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and his team for their dedication to improving Nigerian seafarers’ welfare.

At the inaugural meeting of the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) on February 5, 2026, National President High Chief Bob Joseph Yousuo – a seasoned seafarer and ITF Africa Fair Play Committee Chair , commended the agency’s efforts while issuing seven key directives to address ongoing challenges.

Yousuo called for:expedited discussions, completion, and signing of the NJIC agreement.Monitoring of shipping companies to ensure all have Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) with their unions.

The statement signed by Comrade (Elder) Aleakhue John Okpono, Secretary General, NMNOWTSSA lauded the apex regulatory agency for the CBAs in checklists for NIMASA’s renewal of shipping company licenses adding that timely issuance of Certificates of Competency (COCs) post-exams to end delays causing hardship.was the right step in the right direction.

According to him, prompt payment of seafarers’ wages, with NIMASA pressing companies to prioritize remuneration and modalities for shipping companies to provide sea time experience for cadets is commendable.

He pointed that funding on advanced training for Nigerian officers, despite the high costs will show the commitment and dedication from the NIMASA boss.

The union boss further urged the DG to consider sponsoring advanced courses for Nigerian seafarers

The union emphasized NIMASA’s role as regulator in implementing these steps to boost seafarers’ livelihoods.
