The Tin Can Island Port Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said it seized different banned drugs worth N3.6 billion between January and June, 2022.
The Commander of the command, Narcotic Commander (NC) Mohammed Aminu Abubakar stated this in his address at the commemoration of 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at Tin Can Island Truck Park in Lagos.
He added that a total of 9 suspects were so far arrested in relation to the seizures and have been charged to court.
According to the NDLEA boss, the drugs include; 1,500kg or 3,000,000 capsules of Tapentadol (Tafrodol), 120mg and 239kg of cannabis indica also known as Colorado.
Earlier, CN Abubakar who said the theme of this year’s commemoration is tagged “Addressing Drug Challenges in Health and Humanitarian Crisis”, added that the agency’s focus is on public health rather than the conventional emphasis on criminal matter approach.
While calling on the stakeholders for closer and meaningful co-operation to make difficult for the ports to be used for drugs trafficking, he however noted that the command would not relent on its oars to rid the port of drug influx.
The Commander stressed that”Drug traffickers and their sponsors have no choice but to quit the port. We are not going to relent in waging war against them and their cohort. We will continue to trace their modus operandi, hound them to their hideouts, arrest and prosecute them.
“Public enlightenment will be intensified to make members of the public wary of the antics of drug cartels in luring youths into drug abuse and trafficking.
“The Agency is sustaining the efforts via the initiative of the current Chairman, Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (RTD) ie War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) of which we are all committed,” he said.
Highpoints of the commemoration day as put together by the command was the awareness and fitness walk along the port corridors and access road; lectures and brainstorming session between the command officials and stakeholders.
The event had in attendance members of the freight forwarding communitiy led by the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) 100% Compliance, the trucking communitiy and other relevant government agencies operating at Tin Can Island Port.
