Navy Rescues 20 Seafarers’ in Daring Calabar Channel Fire Operation; One Missing

The Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy, led by Flag Officer Commanding Rear Admiral CD Okehie, on Monday, executed a swift and professional rescue mission along the Calabar Channel.

According to a statement on Tuesday, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) OSE, on routine patrol, responded to a distress call at around 1:00 PM from Motor Vessel (MV) CHIMBA EXPRESS, which was traveling from Gabon to Calabar carrying scrap materials and logistics with 21 crew members—14 Nigerians and 7 Cameroonians.

The statement noted that upon arrival, NNS OSE encountered heavy smoke billowing from the vessel noting that Naval personnel bravely rescued 20 crew members who had abandoned ship or were stranded on the weather deck, providing immediate first aid.

The fire was contained to the midship and aft sections, preventing it from spreading to the forward storage area thanks to the timely deployment of additional naval units and support from local fishermen.

The vessel’s Chief Engineer, who jumped overboard fearing an explosion, remains missing, with search efforts ongoing.

Lieutenant Commander KK Ahunanya, Base Operations Officer at Nigerian Navy Ship VICTORY, praised the team’s gallantry and reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to maritime safety and protecting lives at sea under the Chief of Naval Staff’s vision.
