NARTO 2019: Kanawa Promises To Tackle Delay Of Truck Movement At Seaports If Elected President

Presidential candidate for the 2019, Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), general elections, Mr Enoch Kanawa has said top on his agenda if voted into office as national president would be the issues of tackling movement of trucks in and out of the nation’s seaports, especially as it affects the Lagos ports.

 

Kanawa who was the former Executive Secretary of NARTO  in a statement made available to our correspondent in Lagos, affirmed aggressive pursuance to tackle issues of extortions and congestion along the port corridors by security agencies and to constant engagement of stakeholders in ameliorating gridlock in the port environment.

 

The Presidential candidate noted that NARTO under his watch would monitor contracts awarded to construction firms thus ensure that road rehabilitation ,maintenance and repairs are executed to the end.

 

Kanawa who hails from Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State, further maintained that such move would be done at zonal level as part of efforts in reducing abandoned projects in the country’s roads.

 

He said: “As an authentic leader that I desire to be ,it is my intention to lead a transparent, accountable and sacrificial leadership that impact on upcoming. generations.

 

For his agenda for the NARTO Presidency, Kanawa stated that : ” To and after consultation with all stakeholders ,we shall look at the desirability of transforming NARTO  from a company limited by guarantee to incorporated trustees so that we can address the issue of conflict, crises and risk management , the issue of rotation of the leadership of the association and many more.

 

“I will also aggressively pursue the issue of extortion , delay, congestion and inaccessibility to Lagos ports by container trucks and the predicament of drivers at the ports.

 

“Through a careful study , I will examine the entire dry cargo transportation I’m such a way to guarantee conducive operational  environment for profitability and for the good of the national economy.

 

“At the same time look at the urgency of a welfare scheme for the dry cargo drivers at the ports.

 

“Set up a committee in conjunction with the Nigerian Police ,NARTO highway patrol and monitoring team to check activities of trucks highjacking, reckless driving , general insecurity on our highways for the benefit of members.

 

According to him, issues bothering on road invasion by multinational organisations will be addressed in a bid to decongest the ports access roads.

 

He lamented that : “The invasion of the road transport industry by big time transport companies and multinationals like Dangote , BUA, Flour Mills , Breweries etc, shall be stopped . This shall be to foreclose the invasion of the wet cargo haulage by the upcoming Dangote refinery and a host of others.
