MWUN : NPA Branch Set To Unionise Over 100 Workers , Fixes BWC Meeting In Delta State

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) branch of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has scheduled its Branch Working Committee (BWC) meeting for March 13 to 15, 2026, in Warri, Delta State.

Speaking with journalists on Monday , about the development, the Branch President, Comrade Alex Bamidele Ajayi, said the BWC is mainly to review the activities of NPA workers  and to also X-ray operational challenges and prospects.

The President noted that the review is centred on both management and union activities and how it affects the workers.

According to him, the meeting would afford union officials the opportunity to take stock of management’s activities, identify areas needing improvement, and commend them wherever they have done well

He maintained that the BWC is supposed to be a quarterly event, but financial constraints have restrained the union, limiting it to twice a year

.”We are planning to have our BWC on the 13th of March in Warri. The reason we are having it in Warri is to ensure an inclusive meeting so that those in Calabar, Port Harcourt, and Onne can meet together.

“The next one we are going to have could be in Lagos or anywhere.Again, you know the hustling and bustling of Lagos. It is an opportunity to get out of Lagos for two or three days to rest and have a fruitful meeting.

“BWC is primarily for taking stock, appreciating the management for what they have done rightly, and informing them on areas where they have not done so well.”

Continuing, Ajayi pointed out that:”It is also a forum where the union leadership needs to talk to union leaders about the importance of their positions and doing their jobs adequately, advising them on what is happening in every port.

“It is also a forum where District Chairmen will come and give us reports of what is happening in their various ports, rub minds, and set the ball rolling for the year.”

On workers’ welfare, the union boss said efforts are ongoing to ensure it is not short-changed.

When asked what the new administration has done within its six months in office, Comrade Ajayi said they have been able to approach about three companies, which they are going to unionize very soon.

He said the union is passionate about standing in for workers who operate within the precincts of the NPA or do similar jobs with the Authority.

His words: “The unionization of companies that do things similar to what the Nigerian Ports Authority is doing—we have been able to meet with three or four companies, and we are on the verge of getting them unionized.”

Speaking further , he said “Out of the companies, there are some that have close to 200 staff, some that have 80, some 50. But what matters is that, so far they are working within the Nigerian ports, our interest is to make sure we stand in for you.

“The fourth one has about 300 or more staff; we have not gotten to the level where I can say much,” he added .
