MWUN Inks MoU With National Transport Safety Committee For Drivers Welfare, Safety, Compliance

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and Joint National Transport Safety Committee of Nigeria have entered into strategic partnership towards a robust seaports haulage operations for drivers welfare, safety and compliance.

The MoU is aimed on the principles of cooperation, mutual respect and a shared vision for a safer ,more efficient and sustainable maritime truck and haulage transport system.

The MoU also recognize that safety is not just a regulatory requirement with a moral obligation to protect the lives of drivers,passengers and communities.

Speaking at the signing of the MoU in Lagos on Monday, President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju stressed the need for sincerity of purpose in the arrangement, saying that workers welfare most be prioritized.

Adeyanju noted that MWUN had entered into various MoU with other groups in time past but added that some were insincere with the agreement, which in turn led to dissolution.

According to him, the union is a reputable organization that will not compromise workers welfare and standards noting that the MoU would address the anomalies of drivers wasting man hours on the port corridors for cargo evacuation.

He stated that the union and the Joint National Transport Safety Committee of Nigeria have been strategizing for years before the MoU was reached , pointing out that safety and welfare of the drivers were part of the modalities reach by the two parties.

 

Earlier , Executive Chairman, Joint National Transport Safety Committee Nigeria , Mogbojuri Taiwo Oluwadamilare, said the partnership with MWUN focused on several key areas, which includes – regulatory compliance, vehicle maintenance, inspection, well being of drivers and passengers etc.

Mogbojuri further noted that the MOU will create a safer more efficient and sustainable maritime truck and haulage transport system with a view of protecting workers welfare.

He reiterated that cooperation and mutual understanding, are some of the agreements reached by both parties ,which according to him , is aimed to also promote ease of doing business in line with the renewed hope agenda of the President , Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The chairman affirmed that “As we sign this MoU we are not formalizing a partnership – we are making a promise to each other , to our stakeholders,and to the communities we serve. A promise to uphold the highest standards of safety to innovate and improve continuously and to collaborate open and transparently ”
