Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, President General, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), has expressed optimism for a brighter marine and blue economy ecosystem , whilst celebrating Nigerian workers on International Labour Day,
Bunu commended their resilience, tolerance, commitment, and perseverance amid the nation’s economic challenges.
In his May Day address in Abuja, Bunu the prominent union leader praised workers across all sectors for upholding the dignity of labour.
He noted that”Their efforts in shaping our economy will never go in vain, despite the issues ravaging the land,” he said, adding that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is actively addressing these problems.
Bunu expressed optimism for a brighter economic future, urging industry stakeholders to exercise restraint and continue delivering genuine service to the nation.
The Ijaw-born labour activist reminded governments at all levels that “labour is the wheel of progress,” stressing that workers—the “kinetic force” of any country—must not be neglected.
He called for urgent reviews of workers’ welfare and remuneration, noting that “no nation progresses by ignoring the well-being of its citizens and workers. A happy worker is the pride of any employer.”
During the event, Bunu emphasized that Labour Day is no joke—it’s a global occasion for workers to voice grievances to governments and employers, demanding better welfare for improved livelihoods. “Today in Abuja, we’re celebrating and letting our employers know where the shoe pinches,”
The union leader also admonished the Federal Government to prioritize insecurity, warning that it hampers labour growth. “A healthy nation guarantees a healthy economy and fearless workers,” he said, while praising employers for their steadfastness, especially in the maritime sector, and expressing hope for better times ahead.
Bunu wished all Nigerian workers a happy May Day, thanking them for their endurance and commitment.
