MWUN: Comr. Ukaumunna Advocates N1.5m Minimum Wage For Dockworkers

Apparently dissatisfied with  the  poor welfare packages for workers, Pioneer President General , Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) , Comrade Uzoije Ukaumunna has advocated for Nigerian dockworkers to earn minimum wage of N1,500,000.00 monthly  each , in line with their contributions to the nation’s economic and modern day realities of hardship faced by the masses.

Ukaumunna who made this known on Thursday, during a courtesy visit to the National Secretariat of the Union in Lagos, stated that workers are underpaid by employers of labour in the maritime industry, noting that the Nigerian dockers are not paid properly when compared with global standard.

According to him, the union play a major role in the growth of the nation and workers like the dockers must be rewarded with the right remuneration.

He further described the port industry as the gateway to the nation’s economic , saying that dockworkers are critical to the day to day running of maritime business.

Primarily, the former P-G also expressed satisfaction for the achievements recorded so far by the Comrade Adewale Adeyanju led MWUN.

In his fatherly role , he further commended the Adeyanju led administration for uniting the four branches of the union even as he prayed for favour , progress and prosperity for members of the union.

Ukaumunna also called on members of the union to forgive him in any way he has erred or offended anyone in the past as President General, MWUN.

Earlier, Adeyanju commended the former P-G for his immense contributions to the maritime industry, the union and workers welfare.

He said the struggle started twenty- three years ago between the Union and the government in which the Pioneer President, Ukaumunna was removed from office by the powers that be.

Adeyanju said the Union is now in tune with their leaders and an end has come to the crisis within the Union.

He stressed the need for synergy among members of the four branches of the Union saying that oneness will take MWUN to greater height and build it to a standard that has already gained international recognitions.

He enjoined members of the Union not to allow mischief makers to use them against each other adding that the former P-G Ukaumunna brought him out of poverty.

A former President of the Dockworkers Branch Comrade Bakare Razak Adekunle enjoined members of the union to shun any form of violence and embrace peace.

He also described the former P-G as visionary and a man with brave heart.

Highpoints of the event was the prayer sessions and blessings by the former P-G to members of the union, including Comrade Adewale Adeyanju.
