MAN Oron, NMU Students Top List Of NSML Cadetship Relaunch Scheme , As 21 Cadets Set For Seatime Training

Students from Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN Oron), Akwa Ibom State and the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Delta State are top beneficiaries of the NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML) cadetship scheme relaunch

NSML has again , reiterated its commitment to domesticating international shipping skills and standards by developing Nigerian cadets to support industry growth, economic advancement and global competitiveness.

Relaunching its cadetship scheme, while speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, NSML, Abdulkadir Ahmed, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to continuous training and development of Nigerian seafarers, noting that the company has selected 21 young cadets for overseas sea-time training.

NSML boss at an induction ceremony held in Lagos on Friday, stated that 13 of the cadets were chosen from Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN Oron), and eight others from the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Delta State.

He said through this programme, NSML aims to not only develop competent seafarers but also inspire leaders who will shape the future of the maritime sector.

The Managing Director affirmed that “We believe that by developing local talent and expertise, we can contribute to the growth and development of the Nigerian maritime industry, creating opportunities for economic advancement and global competitiveness,” he stated.

Noting that seafarers are the lifeblood of the shipping industry, serving as a fulcrum for the growth and development of both the Nigerian and the global shipping industry, he said “In an era of rapid technological change and expanding international trade, the need for well-trained, adaptable, and highly skilled seafarers has never been greater.

 

“Today marks a significant milestone not just for us in NSML, but for the entire Nigerian maritime sector, as we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the continuous training and development of seafarers.

“It is through ongoing education, practical experience, and professional development that we ensure our industry remains resilient, competitive, and safe,” he emphasized.

Ahmed added: “At NSML, we recognize the importance of investing in the next generation of maritime professionals. Our cadetship programme is designed to provide a comprehensive and structured learning programme, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and expertise required to excel in this dynamic industry.

“By investing in the development of qualified, competent and skilled seafarers, we are addressing the global perennial shortage of skilled professionals and ensuring sustainability in the supply chain for the maritime sector, whilst deepening Nigeria’s footprints in the global maritime sector.

He revealed that NSML’s commitment to excellence goes beyond cadetship, as the company’s centre – NSML Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE) in Bonny Island has presently secured UK MCA accreditation for four (4) courses: Human Element Leadership & Management, HELM-Management, HELM-Operational, Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS), and Basic Liquefied Gas Tanker Operations.

“Our commitment to excellence goes beyond cadetship. At present, the NSML Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE) in Bonny Island stands as a beacon of world-class training. We have secured UK MCA accreditation for four (4) courses, Human Element Leadership & Management, HELM-Management, HELM-Operational, Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS), and Basic Liquefied Gas Tanker Operations, our facilities are open to external delegates, reinforcing our role as a hub for maritime knowledge and skills development, making it a foremost training centre for advanced training in Africa”,the MD noted.

He enjoined the 21 cadets to be diligent, be focused, and be committed to excellence. “Take advantage of the training, mentorship, and exposure that this programme offers. Develop your skills, build your network, and strive to become the best version of yourself,” he said.

The Acting Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Dr Kevin Okonna, disclosed that NSML conducted a detailed audit of the academy’s training facilities and equipment before finalising the selection process.

Okonna said the development marked the revival of a long-standing relationship between MAN and NSML dating back to the early 1990s, when many academy cadets completed their mandatory sea time through the company and later rose to senior officer positions on NLNG vessels.

Similarly, Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian Maritime University, Prof. Florence Oluwafemi, described the induction as a significant milestone for maritime education in Nigeria.

She emphasised the need to integrate practical industry exposure with theoretical learning to support industrialization and innovation.
