LEKKI PORT: SSASCGOC Maritime To Embark On 3 – Day Training Programme For Elected Officers

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies SSASCGOC, Maritime Branch has disclosed plans to organise a 3- day training workshop programme for the newly elected district executives of the Lekki Free Port Terminal, as part of measures to effectively engage management on labour related matter.

President of SSASCGOC, Maritime Branch , Comrade Akinola Bodunde disclosed this recently shortly after the inauguration of executives held in Lagos .

The President stressed the need for some of the executives to undergo some training in furtherance for them to be abreast with labour laws and practice .

According to him, the training programme will further expose the executives to what unionism entails noting that the Maritime branch of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) affiliate group is a professional organisation that ensure due diligence is followed.

He stated that some of the executives are not exposed to labour activities hence the need for the capacity building programme for them.

Bodunde added that the training is aimed to boost productivity of workers saying that the era of hooliganism is over.

“We are taking the new executives for a three day training programme, they need to understand the rudiments of leadership,. how to relate with members and management.

“To that effect we will send a letter  for management management approval to understand what we intent doing for the executives in line with leadership training,” the President to the Chief Executive Officers of Lekki Freeport Terminal.

Emphasizing on the solidarity movement, he  urged management of Lekki Freeport Terminal to treat workers fairly in line with Nigerian Labour laws and other international convention, noting that the union will work closely with the terminal operator for the betterment of the industry and the nation’s economy.

With the slogan “Injury to one ,injury to all”, Bodunde urged the executives to prioritize their  job description effectively and efficiently given to them pointing out ”

He assured management that the workers will contribute their quota towards ensuring effective service delivery in port terminal operations urging the employers to take proper care of the workers welfare.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of LFT, Mr. Yann Magarian stated the resolve of the terminal operator’s commitment to work with the workers and Unions.

He promised to adhere to the rules of engagement as contained in the labour laws saying, “We will do something together.”
