The House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Education, Safety and Administration has assured stakeholders of its continuous review on existing laws for the betterment of the shipping sector.
Chairman of the committee, Honourable Lynda Ikpeazu gave the assurance at the World Maritime Day Celebration held in Lagos.
Ikpeazu ,while reacting to stakeholders suggestions ,noted that the lower chambers would work in tandem for the sector growth adding that will synergize with the executive arm of government to revamping the sector.
According to her, called on the stakeholders to carry the lawmakers along in achieving set goals to maritime growth.
Ikpeazu represented Onitsha North South Constituency of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on maritime agencies and parastatals to work closely with the green chambers in achieving set goals for the sector.
The lawmakers reiterated that there was need for the sector to approach to Bank Of Industry (BOI)for the funding of capital project that could sustain maritime growth adding that the lawmakers would ensure apt policies to promote shipping in the country and sub region.
Also speaking at the event, Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA),Mr.Peterside Dakuku harped on the need for data gathering and authentication across all modes of transportation.
While disclosing the number of surveillance equipment under the agency purview, Peterside noted that the agency has acquired three helicopters, seventeen interceptor sea crafts, and two special mission vessels.
Others include: Special aircrafts , sixteen armoured vehicles and a total of Rapid Response Maritime Security Unit.
