LASG Confirms Casualties in Christmas Eve, GNI House Fire, Recovery Ongoing

The Lagos State Government has detailed the casualty toll from the devastating Christmas Eve fire at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, amid public speculation.

As of December 31, 2025 evening, recovery efforts continue with one additional body retrieved, bringing confirmed fatalities to at least four.Key casualty numbers include:8 males (including one fireman) rescued with injuries and hospitalized.3 males and 2 females treated for minor injuries on-site and released.1 adult female extricated dead from the rubble.2 adult males extricated (presumed fatalities).3 persons burnt beyond recognition.

The government deployed first responders—including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, LASAMBUS, and security agencies—immediately after the alarm. Teams remain on-site for systematic search, rescue, and forensic assessments.

“We sympathize with all who have lost loved ones and urge patience to avoid speculation that could hinder operations,” said Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, in a signed statements.

Updates will follow as recovery concludes, the statement added.

The Commissioner stated that “The Lagos State Government has taken note of speculations and assertions concerning the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House (GNI) on Martins Street, Lagos Island, following the Christmas Eve fire.

“The Government wishes to, once again, sympathize with all those who have lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident. May The Almighty give them the strength to go through this tough time. We feel their pains and understand their anxiety.

“As soon as the fire alarm was received, the Government deployed teams of first responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), security agencies, and other emergency and safety units.

” These teams have remained on the site, conducting systematic search, rescue, and safety operations – in line with internationally accepted emergency response protocols. They will remain there and continue to work until the completion of recovery operations supported by thorough and forensic assessments.

“The Government appeals to the public, affected families, and all stakeholders to exercise patience, restraint, and sensitivity, and to refrain from spreading speculations that could heighten public anxiety or undermine ongoing operations.
The Lagos State Government remains fully committed to the safety of all and professional handling of this tragic incident.
