ITF ,NLC Boss  Adeyanju Champions Sustainable Maritime Environment Protection

The Vice Chairman of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has celebrated World Maritime Day with the entire global maritime community.

International Maritime Day is observed annually on September 25.

This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” is truly significant for maritime operators worldwide.

Adeyanju a former President General,Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN)noted that the World Maritime Day event has matured, generating much awareness and potential for the world to embrace.

This year’s event emphasizes the gifts of the ocean, which provides humanity with food, trade, jobs, biodiversity, and climate regulation. As maritime operators, if we are to enjoy these benefits, we must protect the ocean by adhering to all rules, regulations, and standards of the ISPS Code that govern maritime operations globally. Doing so will make the world a better place through maritime activities.

In a statement on Thursday, September 25, Comrade Adeyanju stressed that Nigeria must embrace the truth by cooperating with world leaders to develop policies that eliminate hazardous emissions harmful to humanity and the source of the nation’s blue economy. This blue economy is already being developed under the leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola.

“When speaking about the blue economy, we cannot separate it from the ocean, which the Creator of the universe has given to nature. Therefore, we must protect it so we do not lose out on trade, jobs, and risk our economy. This is why we must all work together to keep the ocean healthy and vibrant for all living creatures beneath it.

“I must commend Minister Oyetola for his vision and the achievements made in his short time in office. The Osun State-born Minister has raised awareness about the ministry by creating wealth and employment in this sector.

“I urge all Nigerians to embrace professionalism in marine and blue economy trade, which is a vital part of both local and international commerce that our country cannot afford to ignore.

“Today, as a maritime professional, I congratulate my colleagues in Nigeria and around the world on this important occasion. United, we can protect the ocean for our collective benefit. Congratulations to everyone from all walks of life who has joined to celebrate this day,” Adeyanju concluded.
