Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday November 1, 2023, inspected the ongoing palliative measure on the Benin-Agbor Road, currently undertaken by Edo State Government
The Governor in his remarks, empathized and sympathized with residents and commuters on their plights resulting from the poor condition of the road.
He said: “I am here today to look at the palliative we are doing on this road. I know that you have been suffering for more than 3 months now. Your market has gone down. You cannot even get to your homes.
“The situation you have here today is beyond the state government. The palliative we are doing, we had to go and look for money to do it, so that we can ease the suffering.”
“This road as you know is not our road. It is a federal road. And federal government has sold this road to somebody.They said they did concession some years ago; about 3 years ago.
” So, they will not allow us to touch it. This one we are doing is by force, because they know they cannot stop you and us. But they are not going to refund us one Kobo, and we are not going to worry about asking them to refund us.”
Speaking on the permanent solution to ameliorate the suffering of the people, Obaseki stated that the state government will go ahead to construct the old road which is a state road.
The Governor said: “The permanent solution is, we will now go and construct the old road which is our own. So, we will start the construction of that road this dry season; and as usual, we will put barricades. No trailer or truck will follow that road.
Meanwhile, the Governor appealed to residents, especially the youths, to remain law-abiding, as the state government is currently working to ease their suffering.
“I want to thank the youths for what you have been doing; for maintaining order. Despite the suffering, you have been peaceful. Please, continue to be law abiding. We will work for you. We care about you. We will do all we can to make sure this road is opened in the next two weeks”, Obaseki appealed.
