FOCUS ON LIFE JACKET: NIWA Enlightens Stakeholders On Marine Safety Code 2023 In Delta State

The Manager, Warri Area Office of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Engr. Rufus Oladimeji has emphasised the need for passengers to make good use of life jackets on the waterways, saying that safety is paramount.

Oladimeji made the appeal during the presentation on safety awareness and the introduction of the Marine Safety Code 2023 in Sapele, Delta State

Harping in the importance of safety awareness on the waterways and use of life jackets, the Area Manager maintained that life jackets are essential safety equipment for preventing drowning and ensuring survival in emergency situations.

Highlighting the importance, Engr. Oladimeji said, “They provide buoyancy, keeping our heads above water, even if we’re unconscious or injured.

In line with key benefits of life jackets, Oladimeji stressed prevents drowning adding that the kits keep passengers afloat, and reducing the risk of drowning.

On the providing proper visibility, the Area Manager explained that brightly colored life jackets make it easier for rescuers to locate anyone under distress., saying that it also
enhances survival.

The NIWA boss added that life jackets increase chances of survival in emergency situations.

According to him, the recently gazetted Marine Safety Code 2023 by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, is aimed at enhancing safety standards on the waterways.

Explaining further, he said, “This code introduces penalties for non-compliance with safety regulations, reckless operation, and other offenses.

“Marine Safety Code 2023 Objectives improves Safety Standards_: Enhance safety protocols for vessels and waterway users, reduces accidents, minimizes the risk of accidents and fatalities, promotes compliance, and adherence to safety regulations.

On how to achieve the feats, he enjoined boat passengers and operators to work together to ensure compliance with safety regulations, foster collaboration and sharing information among stakeholders

He added that community dwellers should be encouraged to be involved as well as report incidents

“In conclusion, safety awareness is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring the well-being of all waterway users. The Marine Safety Code 2023 is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

“Let’s join forces to promote a culture of safety and responsibility in our waterways. Note, all offenders shall be.prosrcuted,” he vowed.
