FG Accredits NIS To Run As Monotechnic,As Chartered Bill Passes 2nd Reading At Senates

 

The Federal Ministry of Education has accredited the Nigerian Institute of Shipping (NIS) to run as a monotechnic, as part of measures to build capacity for the maritime industry.

President of NIS , Dr Martins Enebeli disclosed this recently during the institute ‘s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held virtually.

Enebeli stated that the institute has been positively impacted through the Implementation of some policies for repositioning in its right direction.

According to him, the institute applied for re-accreditation and upgrading at the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) adding that presently, NIS has met all the necessary requirements as stipulated by the Board.

Enebeli said the criteria of land acquisition is ongoing , even as he assured that the process is already in the final stage through efforts of the executives.

He said “We have also applied for an upgrade to a Monotechnic and approval has been granted. Part of the criteria to finalize the process is to provide 5 acres of land. The Executives are doing there best to secure the land.

“Re-evaluation of the institute’s programme
Immediately this present administration took over office, they observed that there is need to re-evaluate the institute professional program at the Federal Ministry of Education. It was pursuit vigorously and tremendous achievement has been recorded at the ministry level. Presently, the re-evaluation is at its concluding stage,”he noted .

For the institute to become Chartered , Enebeli pointed out that “It will be recalled that the Bill of the institute has successfully passed its Second Reading at the Senate awaiting Clause by Clause, before ascent by the President.

” The Executive Council are doing their possible best to ensure that the bill will be assented soon.”

 

On NIS curriculum development, he reiterated that the institute in its vision of meeting up with the dynamics of shipping has developed a modern curriculum/syllabus, adding that the template has been expanded to all the modes of transport with the inclusion of air,road, rail, pipeline and space transport.,

While speaking on collaboration with other institutions, he explained that the institute has partnered with international organizations and institutions for exchange of programmes and cross fertilization of ideas.

In institute’s quest to make members more relevant in the maritime industry and it allied, the executive has put in tremendous efforts in the acceptability of its credential both academically and professionally, saying that presently, Ghana Maritime Authority accepts the NIS certificate and transcript for Certificate of Competency (COC) in Ghana.

” Furtherance to that, the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA) and Regional Maritime University recognizes and accepts the institute’s certificate for and upgrade and furthering courses in Ghana.

“Additionally, the institute certificate is also evaluated to that of BSc in the United States of America. We are working to finalyse with World Education Services (WES) in Canada. Majority of our members has also advanced their careers in Australia and other parts of Europe with NIS certificate, Enebeli stressed.

Primarily, the NIS boss also averred that the institute has its presence in the Nigeria Military as such, the foremost capacity building body certificate is of the major basic entrance into the Nigerian Navy and the the Nigeria Police (Marine Department) stressing that “We are also in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other government agencies.
