EXCLUSIVE: Seaports/Marine Immigration Repatriates Indian Seafarer From Nigeria
Operatives of the Lagos Seaports and Marine Command of Nigeria Immigration Service, has said that an Indian seafarer, simply identified as Mr Chatanveer Singh has been repatriated.
According to a statement made exclusively to DAILYFOCUS NEWS ONLINE on Saturday, by the Deputy Superintendent of Immigraton ,Augustus Maisor, Public Relations Officer, Lagos Seaports/Marine Command ,the stranded seafarer’s repatriation to India was facilitated through the collaborative efforts of the Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
The statement reads in full: “The Lagos Seaports and Marine Command of Nigeria Immigration Service on Tuesday, 18th February, 2020 repatriated an Indian national, Mr Chatanveer Singh through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
“Our investigations revealed that Mr Singh had been employed and engaged onboard the Nigerian vessel MT GRAND 1 by Africon Shipping Services Limited, which went moribond; thereby abandoning the crew at the mercy of Pak Marine & Shipping Services Limited as Managers without recourse to the Service’s extant rules on the employment of immigrants.
“The stranded seafarer’s repatriation to India was facilitated through the collaborative efforts of the Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
“This brings to limelight the existing synergy between the two agencies in ensuring that the country’s maritime corridors are secured against illegal incursions.
“Consistent with the Comptroller General’s resolve to rid the nation of irregular immigrants, the Comptroller, Lagos Seaports and Marine Command, Olubusola A. Fashakin advised shipowners and other employers of labour to be mindful of the provisions of Section 38(1) of the Immigration Act 2015 regarding the employment of immigrants.
