ENCROACHMENT: Ministry Of Works To Demolish Perimeter Fencing At Tin Can Island Port

The Raji Babatunde Fashola led Ministry of Works has issued a 72 hours notice to the Nigerian Ports Authority( NPA) over moves for the demolition of the perimeter fencing and other structures at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos .

The perimeter fence which was constructed in line with the International Ships and Ports facility Security (ISPS) code, gulped billions of naira upon it’s completion in 2018.

But barely two years into the completion, the ministry has reiterated it determination to encroached into the NPA’s access road to further expand the ongoing construction.

It was gathered that the notice of demolition was issued last Friday by the ministry for the purpose of the ongoing road construction along the port corridors of Apapa-Oshodi expressway inward the seaport arteries

The NPA Fence at Tin Can Island Port corridor

Even though the date of demolition elapsed on Monday ,our correspondent who was on ground to monitor the exercise observed that officials of the Raji Babatunde Fashola did not show up as at working hours .

It was gathered that the process was aimed at expanding the corridor , even as our correspondent was told by insider sources that some structures like Hannover Terminals and National (CONOIL) filling Station might be affected in the process.

When contacted for response,Port Facility Security Officer in charge of Tin Can Island Port,NPA ,Mr. Akindele Olajide confirmed to our correspondent that a letter was issued to Port Manager of the NPA,Tin Can Port on the demolition of the see through fence and other fences along the access road.

Olajide, while corroborating the demolition exercise , said that management of the NPA was aware about the exercise adding that the demolition was supposed to commence on Monday after the 72 hours notice issued by the ministry of works.

He explained that the common users road which has been under construction for a while may take at least forty days before completion which according to him, was the information obtained from the ministry.
