DIVERSIFICATION: MWUN Floats Haulage, Export Business Ventures

In a bid to embrace self reliance and to generate revenue for the sustenance of the organisation, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has ventured into haulage and export businesses.

 

Speaking at the Dockworkers Branch Workers Committee (BWC) in Lagos , last Thursday, President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju stated that the union could not rely solely on check off dues for its sustainability but to look inward towards by achieving other source of income.

 

The Union leader said the innovation would result to Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which in turn will further boost the financial muscle of the union.

 

He noted that the limited liability company was a foundation laid by the past President General of MWUN, adding that some unions are thriving through IGR and diversification.

 

According to him, unions like Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and others are some of the organisations that have ventured into projects yielding dividends for members adding that WMUN has what it takes to be part of such success stories.

 

The Union boss who also doubles a a member of Trustee of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), said that the union would diversify into businesses that would boost the welfare of members.

 

He maintained that the union has contributed immensely to the growth of the maritime industry and will be deeply involve in the exportation of legitimate items.

 

“Its all about continuity because our past leader laid the foundation for us and we are trying to improve on it .

 

“We felt we should go into a venture that will help members of the union and I believe we have not violated the Nigerian constitution by registering a company.

 

“If you look at activities of other unions ,you will agree with me that they don’t believe in the check off dues alone.

 

” Look at NUPENG, they are into hospitality business,same goes to NUT,Food and Beverages Union etc ; and these people believed that the maritime sector is an industry where milk,honey, and hard currencies exist.

 

He further assured that the business will be handled by experts,adding that sustainability is key in ensuring that the business thrive.

 

“We are going to export anything legitimate as a law abiding union.

 

While lamenting on the challenges in the last two years in office,Comrade Adeyanju maintained that the deplorable condition of the roads linking the seaports have rendered some members of the union jobless, calling on the government to expedite actions in fixing the corridors.

 

While highlighting some of his achievements in the last two years in office, Comrade Adeyanju ,reiterated that payment of tally clerk and onboard has been addressed as the verification exercise has been concluded while awaiting responses from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for onward payment.
