CUSTOMS: Seme Command Engages Beninese Counterparts To Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Comptroller Wale Adenuga, Customs Area Controller of Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, recently convened a Joint Border Management stakeholders’ meeting with officials from Benin Republic Customs, security agencies, and business representatives from both nations.

In his address, Comptroller Adenuga emphasized the strategic importance of the Seme-Krake border for West African trade and its vital role in boosting intra-African commerce under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The meeting aligns with directives from the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, to eliminate all barriers hindering free trade flow, in accordance with ECOWAS protocols.

Highlighting the border’s significant economic potential, especially given the long-standing historical, cultural, and commercial ties between Nigeria and Benin, Comptroller Adenuga outlined key outcomes from the meeting. He warned that any official or non-governmental individual impeding the lawful movement of goods and people will face arrest and prosecution. He encouraged traders and travelers to report grievances directly for swift resolution.

Additionally, truck examinations will now be conducted at designated bays to streamline import procedures. The meeting—second in a series under the new controller—brought together senior officials including the Nigeria Embassy’s Chargé d’affaires to Benin, security leaders, and business community members from both countries. Discussions focused on improving truck tracking removal times, reducing checkpoints, fighting corruption, and fostering ongoing dialogue to enhance trade efficiency.

On border space use, Comptroller Adenuga stressed that the crossing is a transit point and must not be used for parking or storage to prevent congestion.

Lt. Col Arnaud Midgrokan, Head of Benin Customs at Krake border and Co-Chair of the Joint Border Post, expressed appreciation for the engagement, expressing optimism that it will pave the way for resolving shared challenges. He pledged continued cooperation with Nigerian counterparts to uphold lawful trade and honor joint agreements.
