Construction Of 13 New Jetties Ongoing In Lagos – Commissioner

The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Lagos State , Mr. Yacoob Ekundayo Alebiosu has disclosed that construction of thirteen new jetties across the inland waterways of the state was ongoing .

According to a statement, the Commissioner said in line with the 4th pillar of the THEMES PLUS agenda of the Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu’s administration: making Lagos a 21st century economy, the ministry has continued to work on its ongoing waterfront estates/man-made islands as well as creating more lands/new housing schemes for development and bridging the housing deficit .

The commissioner noted that in furtherance to the mandate on Infrastructural provisions for sustainable economic growth and social development as well as acquisition and deployment of geospatial information for sound decision making and good governance in the waterfront areas in the State, the Ministry began the bathymetric survey of Lagos Lagoon, rivers and creeks during the period under review.

He noted :”To complement the existing jetties and create more avenues for water transportation, construction of 13 new jetties are currently on-going, while some are at advanced stages of completion. This is in addition to the 7 jetties and terminals commissioned and handed over to LASWA for management last year.

He disclosed that the Ministry has also commenced the deployment of drones to capture the boundaries and adjoining details of all her waterfront schemes under Public and Private Partnership (PPP)schemes to produce images of and for geospatial Information.

He said the ministry also strive to ensure balance between economic development and preservation of the waterfront shoreline from erosion and prevent adverse changes to the ecological system by regulating and monitoring dredging and reclamation work in private and public waterfront schemes.

According to him,the schemes already captured include: Eko Atlantic City, Amuwo Odofin Waterfront Scheme and Okun Ajah Waterfront Scheme.

“This is another private estate project with approval for the reclamation and development of 350.455 hectares within Oworonshoki foreshore, Kosofe LGA for mixed development uses.

“Reclamation is ongoing with 5 hectares achieved the following under listed proposed islands/estates have also been approved by Mr. Governor for reclamation work. However, the proponents are still perfecting their documentation and payments.”

For Amuwo Odofin waterfront scheme, Alebiosu pointed out that “This is a concession project between Lagos State Government and Rockwealth Integrated Services limited for the reclamation and development of 26.67 hectares (5.85 hectares of dry land & 19.82 hectares of water) at Amuwo Odofin Local Government area.

He added that the approved sharing ratio is 75%:25%. adding that reclamation work is ongoing.
