Comrade Bunu Lauds FG’s Intervention Over Seafarers’ Verification Exercise
Ahead of the pension payment for retired workers, Deputy President General, Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria MWUN Comrade Francis Bunu has commended the federal government for the timely intervention of verification exercise for aged seafarers’ .
Bunu , a former Branch President, Seamen and Water Transport Branch , MWUN made the commendation at the recently concluded verification exercise held in Surulere, Lagos, South West Nigeria.
Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the exercise, Bunu reiterated the union’s commitment towards ensuring better welfare packages for both the aged and active seafarers’, noting that the MWUN will continue to engage government constructively in furtherance to better the lots of seamen.
The DGP also lauded efforts made by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola for the timely intervention and understanding as part of measures for the seafarers’ to embark on the verification exercise.
He also commended the former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Bashir Jamoh and Managing Director,Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Koko Bello saying that their contribution for the exercise was laudable.
However, the unionist assured the aged seafarers’ that MWUN will soon enter into another round of negotiations with government to determine appreciable payment.
Recall that for over two decades, workers under the employment of Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) have been clamouring for their rights but the federal government declined to pay the benefit accrued for them .
A cross section of beneficiaries and aged seafarers’ present during the exercise commended the Comrade Adewale Adeyanju led MWUN for the intervention, even as they prayed for stability and progress of the union.
