The Shipping Branch of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has celebrated outgoing National Treasurer, Comrade Uche Igwe Onu and President, Comrade Ekpeyong Etim Ekpeyong for their dedication contributions and commitment to the union and industry.
The members from shipping branch described both of them as pillars to the sub sector,even as they expressed satisfaction for their respective roles as regards workers welfare and union activities.
Members from the national and branch also took turns to extol the comrades for their exemplary leaders qualities in the last eight years.
Igwe Onu who had flagged off campaign to contest for the post of President General MWUN but recently threw in the towel .
Igwe Onu was a former President, Shipping Branch MWUN before being elected as national treasurer.

Similarly, Comrade Ekpeyong was the branch treasurer before he was elected to succeed Igwe Onu at the branch level .
Speaking at the occasion held at the Union ‘s national secretariat on Wednesday in Lagos, President General, MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju described Igwe Onu as a unionist with strong knack for negotiation.
Adeyanju stated that Igwe Onu is a thoroughbred unionist, a brother, friend and has been promoter of the system, adding that he is a born leader .
The PG stated that Igwe Onu engaged him recently by declining his electoral ambition as the next President General of MWUN, stressing that ” Uche has never gone out to destroy the system. He has done well for shipping and not only shipping,he has done well for the industry.
According to the PG ,Uche loyalty to the system is 100% saying,”You are a wonderful brother and there will be no crisis in the election come this Friday”.
Adeyanju further appreciated Igwe Onu for his contribution to the industry and the union.
He also commended Comrade Ekpeyong for his advisory roles to contestants.

Also speaking, Vice President,Shipping Branch,Comrade Funmi Fasan stated that Igwe Onu ‘s footprint in the branch and union are unforgettable memories .
Responding, Igwe Onu commended members from shipping branch for the honour saying that It is worth doing.
Igwe Onu affirmed that those honoured are the first set of personalities from the branch who are awarded, urging the branch members to keep the flag flying.
On the election, he maintained that there is no grudges with any contestants or members of the union.
He maintained that ” There is no ill feelings against anyone. The system has to go on therefore we will work together to make sure the system stays afloat. I am still available , and when ever my opinion or advice is needed I will ensure I give it out.”
Others who were honoured at the day are Comrade Danladi Tanko, the immediate past secretary and Comrade James Ironkwe.
Highpoints of the award ceremony was the gift presentation (fridge and television)to the two frontliners , while cash gifts were also given to Tanko and Ironkwe respectively.
