Akintoye Insists On Timely Chapter Elections, Rallies Support For Wale Cole As Tin Can Chapter Chair

A former Chairman ,Tin Can Island Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Ojo Akintoye, has refuted claims that the Western Zone of the association executives recommended postponing the upcoming chapter elections.

During a meeting of the Western Zone members, which included ANLCA Vice-President and various chapter leaders, Akintoye emphasized that the communique issued after the meeting did not suggest any delay in the elections scheduled across the Western, Eastern, and Northern zones as reported by an online news medium.

This is even as he highlighted the importance of holding elections within this month, citing significant scheduling and operational concerns.

He stated that the ANLCA’s electoral timetable, as established by the Association Electoral Committee (ASECO), is clear and should be followed without delay. “The timetable is out, and we are all prepared,” he noted, expressing that further delays could disrupt the organization’s functionality and lead to widespread dissatisfaction.

Primarily , Akintoye who opposed the postponement stated that the upcoming holiday season, marked by year-end festivities and family obligations, would make it challenging for voters to participate if elections were deferred. “If the elections are pushed back, members may be unavailable until the end of January, meaning the elections would likely be delayed until February,” Akintoye warned.

He argued that the ANLCA membership, especially in the Western Zone, is eager for a swift electoral process to ensure smooth transitions and maintain momentum within the organization.

The Eastern Zone, he mentioned, is ready for the elections, leaving the Western Zone’s reservations baffling to Akintoye. He further asserted, “Any candidate who isn’t prepared should reconsider their candidacy. The elections should not be delayed on behalf of a few unprepared candidates.”

Akintoye also pointed out that the interim administration initially appointed for a three-month tenure is now approaching six months in office. He fears that additional delays may suggest indefinite postponement, effectively sidelining chapter leadership and undermining ANLCA’s governance. “It is not in the spirit of our constitution to retain an administrator indefinitely.

” This election is vital to reduce tension and return stability,” he added.

Alongside his call for an on-schedule election, Akintoye publicly endorsed Wale Cole for Tin Can chapter chairmanship, citing Cole’s operational expertise, grassroots experience, and deep-rooted connection within ANLCA. “We need a leader familiar with the challenges at the grassroots level, someone diplomatic and well-versed in our customs,” Akintoye said.

Wale Cole, according to Akintoye, embodies the qualities of resilience and commitment, having dedicated years to the association despite challenges. Cole’s experience within ANLCA would position him well to address chapter-specific issues and represent the membership effectively.

“This is not about personal gain but about choosing a leader who understands the struggles of our members and can tackle issues with the necessary skills and empathy,” he explained, urging members to back Cole’s candidacy for a robust and responsive leadership.

Akintoye also addressed concerns related to the recent dismissal of Tope Fatimein from ASECO, an action he deemed potentially divisive and suspicious to some within the association. Although he refrained from detailed comments due to personal ties with Fatimein, Akintoye stressed the need for transparency in the association’s dealings, especially concerning election-related finances.

He suggested ASECO’s accounts be made public to dispel any rumors of financial misappropriation or impropriety, asserting that “open and transparent processes are essential to uphold trust within ANLCA.”
Concluding, Akintoye emphasized the importance of allowing ANLCA elections to proceed without legal entanglements. “The constitution and the rules of our association must prevail, and everyone must respect these processes for ANLCA to enjoy peace and stability,” he said.

The former chairman urged all factions and members to prioritize the association’s collective interests, reinforcing his stance for a peaceful election this month and supporting Wale Cole as Tin Can’s next chapter leader.
