There are strong indications that attacks on vessels in the Gulf of Guinea has continued to soar in 2025, as sea pirates have reported kidnapped three seafarers’ aboard a fishing trawler off Ghanaian coast.
According to a statement, from the Ghanaian authorities over the weekend, 3 Chinese nationals were kidnapped on the 27th of March 2025.
The vessel simply identified as Mengxin 1 was attacked at 17.53 hours with captain,Chief engineer and Chief mate all held hostage by the daredevil sea pirates.
The Ghana armed forces in a press statement disclosed that the Ghanaian Navy is investigating a suspected pirates attack on a Ghanaian registered fishing vessel,Mengxin 1 that took place in its waters on the evening of Thursday 27 March 2025.
The statement added that approximately 1753 hours, preliminary reports indicated that seven heavily armed individuals boarded the ship and fired warning shots, prompting the several crew to seek cover in a safe area.

DAILY FOCUS NIGERIA further gathered that the pirates stayed on board the ship for about three hours after assembling everyone on deck thereby confiscating their mobile phones.
The statement signed by Director General, Public Relations,Ghana Armed Forces , Brigadier General E . Aggrey-Quashie, revealed that following the pirates departure from the ship, the crew members came out of hiding to find out that three Chinese nationals were missing and were expected to be kidnapped by the pirates .
According to the report, the ship was sailed closer to land before reporting the event because there was no mobile network coverage at sea.
Similarly, the rest of the crew is safe and the ship safely docked at Tema Fishing Harbour , even as the Marine Police , Eastern Naval Command , Naval Intelligence Personnel have conducted initial interrogation confirming the incident and the suspected abduction.
However, information of the incident has been shared with neighbouring countries through ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordinating Centre MMCC Zone F in Accra, under Yaounde Architecture for maritime security , in order to alert them to look out for the kidnappers .
Meanwhile, intelligence agencies have been deployed to locate and free the hostages , Ghana Authority stated.
Recall that a vessel was attacked in March with the Gulf of Guinea off Sao Tome and Principe where over ten seafarers’ were held hostage.
