We Will Not Be Silent, Amnesty International Fires Back At Nigerian Government

Abuja – Amnesty International on Friday in Abuja said that the organisation would not be silent but rather continue to raise its voices against injustice and human rights violation by the Nigerian government.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Media Manager, Isa Sanusi when newsmen sought for the reaction of the organisation to a media report that it has been placed on the watchlist by the Nigerian government.

The statement read; Amnesty International is a human rights organization and not affiliated to any interests, political, religious or commercial. We have been working on Nigeria since 1967 – our role is to hold governments to their obligations to respect and protect human rights, and to ensure that anyone whose rights are violated has an effective remedy.

” For this reason, the organization continues to call on the Nigerian government to use its authority and resources to investigate all allegations of human rights violations and abuses, including of rape, torture, arbitrary detentions and unlawful killings, to ensure reparation for the victims, to hold the perpetrators accountable, and to ensure non-repetition of the violations.

” Despite sponsored protests, we will not stay silent. In the face of efforts to evade responsibility or to smear our organization, we will continue to raise our voices whenever and wherever we see injustice, sexual abuse, discrimination against women, or any other violations of human rights in Nigeria” .

The organisation added that sponsored protests against the organisation would not deter it from its mandate in holding governments to their obligations to respect and protect human rights.

Amnesty International was allegedly placed under security surveillance for retweeting #RevolutionNow hashtag been circulated by some concerned Nigerians who were planning to stage a revolution protest tagged ” Days of Rage ” on 5th August across the country.

The Presidential Candidate of African Action Congress ( AAC ) , Omoyele Sowore recently said that he would lead a revolution protest across the country over alleged rigging of the 2019 general elections.
