We’ll take over Edo House of Assembly within a week-Ahmed Lawan declares

The President of the Senate Ahmed Lawan on Tuesday declared that the National Assembly would take over Edo State House of Assembly within one week if the state Governor fails to order a fresh proclamation on the inauguration of the 24-member assembly.

 

Senator Lawan stated this during plenary on the adoption of the recommendations of Ad Hoc report on the troubled Edo lawmaking chamber.

 

Senator Lawan, however, said the National Assembly was not in a hurry to take action against the troubled assembly.

There are perceived political rivalry between the immediate past governor of the state who is also the incumbent National Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole and his the state governor Godwin Obaseki.

It was gathered that the state assembly was inaugurated midnight of June 18, 2019, where elected members who are loyal to the governor were present.

 

A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, had confirmed that that nine of the 24 members-elect were present.

 

The inauguration had heightened political tension in the state, prompting the Federal House of Representatives to set up a committee to investigate and report back to the house. They submitted their report.

 

Presiding, the Senate President read of one of the recommendations which grant the national assembly power to take over state house of assembly within one week if fresh proclamation was issued by Governor Obaseki.
