DIRTY LAGOS : Sanwo-Olu Orders LAWMA To Lead Immediate Statewide Clean‑Up
The Lagos State Government has acknowledged residents’ concerns over recent refuse accumulation in parts of the state and reassures Lagosians that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has placed the situation at the top of the government’s agenda.
Recognising the disruption and public health risks posed by the build-up, the Governor has ordered an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across Lagos.
He has directed the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to lead a coordinated, round‑the‑clock response, supported by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and all relevant agencies and service providers.
According to a post on the official meta page on Thursday, additional equipment and manpower have been deployed to affected areas to clear backlogs quickly and restore normalcy. Strategic operational measures are being implemented to improve collection efficiency, disposal practices and traffic management around sanitation operations.
Governor Sanwo‑Olu emphasised that Lagos produces about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily and that occasional operational disruptions can occur in a rapidly growing megacity. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed the government’s capacity and resolve to address the problem decisively and prevent
recurrence through strengthened systems and infrastructure.
Progress is already visible in several locations and residents should expect continued improvements in the coming days. The administration will also accelerate investments and reforms in waste management and urban renewal to build long‑term resilience.
The government appeals to citizens, community leaders, market associations and businesses to support sanitation efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding practices that block drainage channels, roadways or designated collection points.
