ILO CONVENTION: LASG ,Trade Unions Mourn Death Of Labour Leader In Switzerland

The Lagos State Government has expressed profound sorrow over the sudden death of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), who died on Monday, 8 June 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr. Bode Agoro, Lagos State Head of Service, on behalf of the state government, extended heartfelt condolences to Adeleke’s family, colleagues, members of the Labour Centres and workers across the state.

Adeleke fell ill while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva as a delegate of the Lagos State group and subsequently passed away after a brief illness.

Agoro described the late labour leader as a “dedicated and committed unionist” who spent his career advancing the welfare, rights and interests of workers. He said arrangements are underway to repatriate Adeleke’s body to Nigeria.

“The Lagos State Government commiserates with his family, colleagues, members of the Labour Centres, and workers across Lagos State on this unexpected, painful and irreparable loss,” the Head of Service said, praying that “Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort his family, colleagues and loved ones during this difficult time.

The Lagos State Government said Adeleke’s legacy of selfless service and commitment to workers’ welfare should continue to inspire future generations

A member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Adeleke was widely respected within the labour movement for his advocacy on decent work and social justice. Tributes have also come from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour organisations attending the ILC, which described his death as a significant loss to the trade union movement.

The NLC confirmed its leadership visited the hospital in Geneva where Adeleke’s body was kept and had begun arrangements for repatriation. The development has cast a sombre mood over Nigeria’s delegation at the international conference.

.It was gathered that the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress led by the President went to the Hospital in Annemmasse France to see comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke who was in the ICU but who had passed on before the arrival of the team.
