Workers’ Day : SSASCFA Urges Employers In Shipping To Invest In Security, Infrastructure

Comrade Harrison Ugochukwu Asonye, President General of the Senior Staff Association of Shipping, Clearing and Forwarding Agencies (SSASCFA) has spotlighted insecurity and poverty as major barriers to decent work in Nigeria’s maritime sector, calling on shipping companies and government to ramp up investments in infrastructure and security.
The PG’s address resonated with national executives, employers, and workers, reinforcing calls for dialogue and action to build a prosperous future for Nigeria’s labour force.
In a poignant Workers’ Day speech, the TUC Affiliate group leader called on employers of labour in the shipping sub sector to look inward and invest massively on infrastructure towards creating a conducive atmosphere for the workforce .
According to a statement made available to DAILY FOCUS NIGERIA, Asonye emphasized that the shipping industry is vital to the marine blue economy but faces heightened operational risks, soaring costs, and productivity dips due to ongoing insecurity.
He said”No worker can perform optimally in an environment where safety is uncertain,” whilst urging employers in shipping firms to prioritize safe workplaces, fair wages, and capacity building.
Asonye directly appealed to shipping companies as “partners in progress,” encouraging them to invest in infrastructure that fosters secure, motivating environments.
Apparently unsatisfied with the level of investment by the liners, the President General highlighted how such commitments could sustain businesses by valuing workers’ resilience, which keeps commerce moving despite challenges.
To the government, he stressed that “investments in security, infrastructure, and economic stability are not optional—they are essential for national growth and social cohesion.” Policies, he added, must deliver real improvements, including respect for workers’ rights and collective bargaining.
SSASCFA boss further recommitted to advocating for its members’ growth in the shipping and maritime sectors, underscoring unity and vigilance under the theme “Insecurity, Poverty: Bane of Decent Work.”
