Nigerian Navy Rescues Three Suspected Stowaways from MSC Stella Off Lagos Coast

The Nigerian Navy has intensified its Search and Rescue (SAR) operations while intercepting three suspected stowaways aboard the merchant vessel MSC Stella off the Lagos Fairway Buoy.

According to a statement on Monday, Personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft acted swiftly on intelligence from the Western Regional Control Centre (WRCC), received around 5:05 p.m. on April 19, 2026.

The statement as confirmed by Navy Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information noted that a Quick Response Team from Tarkwa Bay boarded the vessel—identified by IMO No. 9279988—about five nautical miles from the Lagos coast.

“The three men allegedly sneaked aboard while MSC Stella was docked at Tin Can Island Port during the early hours of April 17.

“This proactive response prevented potential risks during the ship’s voyage.”,the statement stated.

It added that the incident reflects the Navy’s ongoing efforts to secure Nigeria’s coastal waters, combat irregular migration, and foster interagency collaboration.

The official statements emphasize sustained SAR missions under directives from Navy leadership.
