MWUN , Western Port Police Command Reaffirm Commitment For Enhanced Security

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), led by Comrade Francis Bunu Abi has reaffirmed strong commitment to partner the Western Port Police Command towards enhancing security at the seaports in Lagos.

Bunu stated this when he paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Commissioner of Police for the Western Port Police Command, CP Agbaminoja Iyabode Oluwatoyin (Mrs.), on Monday .

According to a statement released on Tuesday, Comrade Bunu and his team received a warm welcome from CP Iyabode and her officers.During the meeting, Comrade Bunu, a prominent maritime labor leader in the country, emphasized that it is tradition for the union to pay courtesy visits to every newly appointed Commissioner of Police at the Western Port Command.

The visit was intended to extend a warm welcome to CP Iyabode, establish dialogue with her and her team, and introduce the newly elected MWUN executives to facilitate effective collaboration on port security.

The veteran sailor and skilled administrator noted that MWUN is the largest and most strategic trade union in Nigeria, highlighting the union’s integral role in this command, which is strategically located at the gateway of the nation’s economy.Comrade Bunu assured continued partnership with CP Iyabode, her officers, and men to maintain a progressive security network at the port and its environs.

He stressed the paramount importance of port security and the need for synergy between both parties to ensure safety in all aspects. He also expressed confidence that CP Iyabode’s tenure at the command will be successful and called for collective efforts to achieve this goal, given MWUN’s longstanding relationship with the maritime sector.Quoting his predecessor, PG Emeritus Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, Comrade Bunu said, “CP Iyabode is ‘Our Own,’ and we must treat her as such.”

Accordingly, the union declared itself “Your Own Too” and welcomed the CP aboard, assuring openness for operational dialogue and information sharing to strike the right balance for port security.

The union president introduced Comrades Agboola Bolaji, President of the Dockworkers Branch, and Olufemi Oluyinka Abass, President of the Shipping Branch, who are readily available for immediate support should he be unavailable due to national duties.Comrade Bunu explained the union’s four branches: Dockworkers, Seafarers & NIWA, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), and Shipping, representing the entire MWUN membership.

In response, CP Iyabode thanked Comrade Bunu and his team, describing them as resourceful partners and the visit as timely and appropriate.She affirmed that the port is the union’s constituency and that the police are committed to ensuring its safety. She underscored that securing the port is a collective responsibility requiring the cooperation of the police, MWUN, and other stakeholders.

CP Iyabode described MWUN as the police’s strongest ally in this endeavor and called for strategic collaboration and information sharing to safeguard port activities and businesses.

She assured that police officers are trained to treat all partners respectfully and that securing the port remains a top priority.

The commissioner encouraged ongoing cooperation and goodwill between the police and MWUN to ensure a safe and thriving environment for legitimate trade within the port.
