Independence Day: SSASCFA Commends Tinubu For Creation Of Marine Blue Economy Ministry

The Senior Staff Association of Shipping Clearing and Forwarding Agencies (SSASCFA) has commended President Bola Tinubu for the creation of the Marine and Blue Economy,as part of the 65th Independence Day celebration.

President of the SSASCFA,Comrade Harrison Ugochukwu Asonye in his message on Wednesday October 1 2025, a copy made available to DAILYFOCUS NIGERIA,maintained that the maritime industry has a bright future adding that all hands must be on deck to sub sector forward.

According to him, SSASCFA will continue to canvass and engage other critical stakeholders towards promoting the maritime sector.

He reiterated that the maritime labour sub sector has the capacity to address the challenges of unemployment in the country calling on the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy,Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola to look inward and tap into the vast opportunities aimed to create wealth for the masses.

Comrade Asonye emphasized that the establishment of the Marine and Blue Economy ministry represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts. He noted that the sector, which encompasses shipping, fishing, oil and gas exploration, and maritime trade, holds immense potential to generate revenue and create millions of jobs if properly managed and supported.

Highlighting the pivotal role of human capital development, the SSASCFA president urged the government to invest more in training and capacity building for maritime workers. He stressed that equipping personnel with modern skills and technology is essential to compete effectively in the global market and to ensure safety and efficiency in maritime operations.

The association also called for infrastructural upgrades across Nigerian ports and waterways. Asonye pointed out that improving port facilities, enhancing navigational systems, and strengthening maritime security would attract more international business and boost the country’s status as a regional shipping hub.

In his address, Asonye underlined the importance of public-private partnerships in unlocking the potential of the blue economy. He encouraged collaboration between government agencies, private investors, and international partners to fund innovative projects, research, and sustainable practices that align with global environmental standards.

Furthermore, the SSASCFA president highlighted the need for strong regulatory frameworks to govern the sector. He advocated for transparent policies that promote fair competition, protect workers’ rights, and ensure environmental stewardship, which would foster long-term growth and stability.

Asonye also pledged the continued commitment of SSASCFA to support government initiatives and engage actively in policy dialogues. He expressed optimism that with concerted efforts from all stakeholders, Nigeria’s maritime industry could become a key driver of economic prosperity and social development.

In conclusion, Comrade Asonye called on maritime workers across the country to remain united and resilient. He urged them to embrace the new opportunities arising from the marine and blue economy agenda and to contribute positively towards transforming Nigeria into a maritime power.
