May Day: Seafarers’ Union Makes Case For Workers Protection, Security, Fair Wages

The Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association, (NMNOWTSSA) has canvassed for adequate security for workers under the marine ecosystem with a view of fair wages and remuneration by employers of labour.

Chief Engr. Bob Joseph Yousuo, National President of the NMNOWTSSA disclosed this while congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion of May Day.

commending their vital contributions to the nation’s economic growth in his May 1, 2025 message, Yousuo urged the Federal Government to prioritize the protection of workers’ rights, particularly those of Nigerian seafarers.

Highlighting the challenging environment faced by workers, Yousuo expressed concern over widespread insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, which he says leaves many unable to sleep peacefully.

The seafarers’ boss  called on all levels of government to fulfill their constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property, emphasizing that no meaningful development can occur amid such uncertainty.

Yousuo also addressed the economic hardships confronting Nigerian workers, citing high inflation, the unaffordability of basic goods like rice, and the failure of many state governments to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage.

He criticized rising costs of fuel, electricity, transportation, and food, urging authorities to provide better welfare packages and social security.

On this year Workers’ Day, Yousuo reaffirmed the union’s demands for decent work, secure jobs, fair wages, and climate action, while rejecting authoritarianism and corporate greed. He called for unity among workers and encouraged employers to adopt collective bargaining agreements and pay living wages.

The union president, recognized as Africa’s leading seafarer by International Transport Workers Federation ITF standards, appealed for synergy among federal, state, and local governments to address Nigeria’s security challenges. He praised workers’ perseverance and dedication, urging them to remain united in the pursuit of improved working conditions.

Yousuo concluded by celebrating the resilience and unity of Nigerian workers, expressing hope for a brighter future and a better Nigeria.
